From the desk of Gary Miller:
What do you know about Nouveau?

In France, there is a town called Beaujeu. That town is credited with the creation of a drink worthy of celebration. Specifically, a young wine called Beaujolais Nouveau which is used to celebrate the end of harvest. The jovial varietal (say that three times fast) laughs in the face of tradition. A red wine meant to be drunk chilled to around 55 degrees is hardly traditional. It is a low tannin and fruity wine that undergoes a quick fermentation process and carbonic maceration and is meant to be drunk much earlier than traditional red wines. It's so time sensitive that when the clock strikes 0001 on the third Thursday in November it is raced using all forms of transportation from bicycle to elephant to Paris to then be shipped all over the world. They race to be the first to enjoy it. For us, it has been known to take the Concorde to New York where it was distributed to all of us, until the Concorde was retired in 2003. In France, its arrival is met with the attention of a celebrity to each bar, pub and tavern. Here in the States, red wine makes up a measly 30% of wine consumption and thus, our poor Beaujolais Nouveau is only celebrated in small circles. What started out as a wine to celebrate harvest for a town in France became a world wide spectacle. Small towns can accomplish a lot of great things. Wine on 49 would like to celebrate Sutter Creek in the same way. So stay tuned to them for more information what Nouveau things are around the corner.
